Last updated August 24, 2022
Reading:
To maximize student learning, we will utilize a variety of texts and student novels to support the various genres of literature. Students will learn strategies to enhance their reading comprehension. They will work in groups which are designed to create learning opportunities that meet students at their instructional level.
Language Arts and Writing for grade 3:
Daily language review will support student learning with grammar, vocabulary and spelling. In addition, our class will focus on the 5 PArts* protocal to strengthen student writing. Second trimester writing focuses on Narrative writing. Students will be provided various prompts to write about their own experiences.
Math: The Union School District's Common Core Math program is Eureka Math. The first trimester begins our mathematical studies with multiplication/division concepts and rounding. Students review addition, subtraction and place value concepts taught in previous years.
Social Studies and Science:
Social Studies curriculum focuses on the geographic regions of California and the indigenous peoples of our area. We learn about communities and citizenship, as well as government & economics.
Our new science for Third grade has a central science unit for each trimester: invisible forces, stormy skies, power of flower and animals.
Homework
Third grade homework consists of 20 minutes of nightly reading, 10 minutes of math facts practice nightly with one page of Eureka math. Math fact practice homework is crucial for 3rd graders. It is a state standard to learn their math facts for multiplication by the end of the year. We will be using the Xtra Math website occasionally in class, and students are encouraged to use this at home as well. It supports all math operations and will begin with a review of addition and subtraction.
To support listening, speaking and report writing standards, occasional projects will be assigned for presentation in class.
The following enrichment activities may be suitable for your child as your budget and interests allow:
Upcoming events:
Wed. 8/30 Back to School Night at 6:30 pm for 3rd grade
